The Best of Bass Guitar Week Stories

Here are the stories we have coming in for Bass Guitar Week. There are two more days to tell your story. So Like us on Facebook and tell us why you deserve the RBB4 case in the comments of of this post.

Spencer Pyne has a great story about how he started playing at the age of 14 and now is daughter is a bass player, singer, and songwriter.

Several giggling bass players tell us why they deserve a case.
Rod Speed has a fretted and fretless bass but only has a case for one of them. He is in the band Ménage à Neuf. Adam Bogle needs one for his Fender 5 string Jazz Bass. Chris Nichols does a lot of gigs with his bass and he would be helped by caring something light and soft instead of heavy and hard. He is in the band Ben Morris & The Great American Boxcar Chorus. A new bass case would make Dylan Kelehan’s life easier during his daily commute as a bass and guitar teacher. Joe K’s bass case burned in a fire but the bass survived.

Doug Child and Paul Medoff are either building or restoring basses and believe the RBB4 would make a great finish to their projects. Paul is in the band The LoveLight Blues.

Andrew Scott and David Daw tell us they need to replace an inferior gig bag. David is in the band Antidote 8

There are some great stories coming in for Electric Guitar Week. Who deserves the free RGB1?

Here is a summary of some of the stories. This is by no means a list of finalists.

  • Jerry Garcia told first told Andy Lackow about what would be his future profession: computer animation.
  • Matt’s says his 3-year-old was able to name classic rock and metal tunes he played on his acoustic.
  • David has tales of hanging out with Bono and Iggy Pop when he was young. Later he took guitar lessons and his son took piano lessons, both making many sacrifices along the way to pursue their love of music.
  • Doug rescues and restores abandoned guitars.
  • Jordan would use the case for his custom neck-thru 70′s Strat.
  • Friends William and Sandy told a story of their first experience with a really loud rig and how it scared them when they were young.
  • Joe’s guitar player carries around his guitar in a sleeping bag.

Keep the stories coming!  You can tell your story here for a chance to win the RGB1 case.  The deadline is Sunday April 9th.

Free Voodoo Daddy & Asleep at Wheel Autographed Bags

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Asleep at the Wheel
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Asleep at the Wheel
Remember the Swing craze of the mid 90′s? In an era of grunge rock, it was a rare offering and adoption from a sub-culture of a sub-culture. (Say that two times fast!)

In ’98, I was working for NAMM (International Music Products Association) and put in charge of hiring the bands for the convention. We were incredibly lucky to be able to book a new jazz swing group by the name of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, along with the King of Country Swing, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel. Of course, everyone knows about Asleep at the Wheel, and I had heard of these Voodoo Daddy cats but hadn’t seen their live show. I guess I didn’t know what I was in for!

Voodoo Daddy opened the set followed by Asleep at the Wheel and then both groups performed together for an incredible finale! When was the last time you’ve seen that? The crowd was knocked out and there was a sense of music history in the air.

That was 10 years ago. It never happened again and probably never will, simply based on the chances of both bands being available at the same time for the same venue. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to witness what, to me, was an unforgettable night.

To commemorate, we chased these guys down on the road and asked them to autograph a couple of our premium bags; one for sax and the other for acoustic guitar… and now, we’re giving them away! Both bags are made with full grain leather and feature the dual-density foam interior and luggage-grade hardware that has made Reunion Blues famous.

You can sign up here for this Voodoo Daddy random drawing. If you want to go for the Asleep at the Wheel bag, sign up here.  If you’re a fan, or just like free stuff, this giveaway is for you. ;-)

Thank you Scotty from Voodoo Daddy and Ray from Asleep at the Wheel for making this happen.

You guys swing.

JM!
