Stuff to Do
"This place isn’t in Chicago exactly; its 3 hours due west in Mount Carroll, Illinois but if you've got an extra night to kill on tour, it is worth it to go. Maniacal genius Jim Warfield has spent the last 20 years converting his house (an old speakeasy in the 1920's) into a haunted house attraction that is unlike any other of its type. Mr. Warfield has built trapdoors, winding staircases, ornate monster-hybrids, concrete labyrinths, and bizarre hydraulic contraptions that will astound you for the sheer folksy audacity of their conception. The house is an inspired engineering wonder. As cool as this house is, the tour wouldn't be half as amazing if it weren’t for the strange and hilarious performance art and storytelling of M.C. Jim as he leads you through his demented house and yard. Jim gives tours at all hours of the day and night (you just have to call ahead of time) and all year long. I recommend going when Halloween isn’t coming up ; the tours are usually longer and more nuanced in the off season."
This world class establishment houses both a school and museum.
The infamous ball park.
